A caretaker is essentially a manager of grounds of property and to take care of all grounds maintenance tasks. If a person decides to become a caretaker, he or she should be aware of the nature of the tasks required for completion.

They are to keep grounds attractive and tidy making them pleasant places for staff, patients and visitors to visit and relax in. Working as a member of the grounds staff, the work includes mowing, lawns planting, weeding borders trimming trees and bushes, sweeping paths and car parks, landscaping, clearing snow and ice. Creating new garden areas in the grounds of a hospital, hospice or clinic will provide a space relaxation for those with mental health issues or dementia. Apart from grounds maintenance, for a hospital caretaker the duties will usually include small repairs and maintenance disposing of clinical and other waste, moving furniture and equipment as needed calling in skilled maintenance staff for larger repairs. Often hospital caretakers will work with others as a team.

This will include being part of the wider estates team which looks after buildings and premises. A caretaker will liaise with clinical staff, (eg GPs) and non-clinical staff (eg porters, receptionists and facilities managers) and occasionally have some contact with patients. However, smaller buildings may need only one caretaker on site. When applying for this job, make sure that these skills are in the tool box of your application. Caretakers need to be willing to do tasks as needed.

Therefore, the applicant should be physically fit for moving, lifting, bending, etc . He or she is responsible for his or her own work often willing to work alone if necessary. Caretakers should be concerned about health and safety issues, have methodical organizational skills, practical skills and communication skills. There are certain organizations that will assist people to become a certified caretaker by giving them training and leading their development. When you start work as a caretaker some organizations offer training and development to include health and safety and manual handling.

Grounds Maintenance

There are also school caretakers. The duties and responsibilities of a school caretaker may vary from school to school but the following is a list of his or her duties and responsibilities. The first is to ensure security. This is accomplished by enforcing security procedures for school buildings and grounds along with the routine and non-routine opening and closing of school premises and grounds. Other tasks are to prevent trespassers on the school premises or grounds and in some cases, ensuring that unauthorized parking of vehicles does not take place. In other cases, a school caretaker is to respond to school alarm system when it is set off and then arrange for the system to be re-set.

The second responsibility is to be in charge of the lighting and heating facilities of the school. The caretaker should be proficient in operating the heating equipment in accordance with school issued instructions. The person should endeavor to ensure that the correct temperatures are maintained in school premises and that an adequate supply of hot water is available.

The school caretaker must maintain the boiler house and plant in a clean and tidy manner and ensure access to all services such as gas, electricity and water. As the individual in charge, the caretaker periodically checks for fuel consumption and reports cases of higher than normal fuel consumption. A school caretaker has a difficult and dangerous job as he or she is to ensure flammable materials are kept out of the boiler room and away from any heat sources. Therefore any school's survival rests pretty much on the caretaker in their premises.
